Financial Choices: Round 1 Voting

People were asked to imagine the following problem and to answer the question.

Manuel is a 17-year-old senior in high school. He is working part-time for minimum wage at a convenience store. He is offered a full time position with a raise and health benefits. He has already been accepted to college. His father wants him to take the full time position because it will help support the family. His mother wants him to not take the position because she wants him to focus on doing well in school.

What would you do if you were in this situation?

For each of the paired answers, choose the answer you like most.

1. Between these two, which do you like most?

A) I think Manuel should listen to his mother about going to college because by doing so he would get a better job than the one his father wants him to take. By going to school and getting a good job, he can support the family and be making more money. Overall he would have a better life. B) I would take the part time position because school comes first. Since it’s my senior year I would like to take full advantage of the resources that I have in school rather than spending all of my time at work. Even though my parents need financial help, I know that by me going to school, in the long run, I will be helping my parents in everything.
2. Between these two, which do you like most?

A) If this was me I would have gone to school and not work; I could have still got a part time job and helped around the house. The reason I say this, is because in the long run I'm trying to get a degree to get a good paying job in which I would be able to help my parents a lot more. I know now is now, but for me and for them it would be best if I went to school. B) I would, sadly, turn down the full time position and stay working part time. I would go to college because in the long run if I go to college I would benefit so much more if I graduated from college and got a degree. I would get a way better paying job.
3. Between these two, which do you like most?

A) If I were in this situation, I'd tell my father I'm doing what's best for me. Mother wants me to finish college and that's what I'm doing. I only want what's best for me, the family, and my future. I would tell my father that if he lets me finish college, I'll take financial administrative business classes, graduate and improve the store or, better yet, start my own business. B) If I was in this situation, I would most likely go to college and get way more money when I graduate afterwards. I would get a real nice job because I have gone to college. My neighbor has always told me to go to college for a better job in life.
4. Between these two, which do you like most?

A) I would tell my dad no, because finishing school and going to college will have me go further in life and make a good career, with good pay and benefits if I stay in school. And, even though they are suffering a little, it will pay off in the long run to proceed with my dream. And, I don't want to grow up making little money when I can make more money. School should always be first for myself and for everyone. That is what I would tell my dad. B) Honestly, If I were in this situation I would accept the position because if my parents were to end up losing the house I would feel horrible about it deep down. I understand family is more important and I can always go to school part time and work hard if I really need too. Some people may disagree, but I would never be able to let my family down even If they told me otherwise. Some people just need to take over the responsibility at a young age even if it not something you asked for.
